About the Opportunity
Currently, Johnston Builders has an exciting opportunity for a Human Resources Manager to join our team in St. Albert, AB, or Whitehorse, YT on a full-time basis. Occasional travel to project sites will be required.
In this role, you’ll support both field and office operations across a diverse construction portfolio in Western Canada. Reporting directly to the leadership team, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of human resources while fostering a supportive and values-driven workplace culture.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading full-cycle recruitment and onboarding for salaried and hourly staff
- Supporting workforce planning, team development, and succession strategies
- Overseeing employee relations, including investigations, conflict resolution, and coaching
- Reviewing, implementing, and maintaining HR policies and best practices
- Ensuring compliance with employment legislation and OH&S standards
- Managing performance management programs and training initiatives
- Driving employee engagement, wellness, and retention programs
- Coordinating payroll data, benefits administration, and HRIS accuracy
- Visiting project sites to support inclusive and safe work environments
- Maintaining HR documentation and managing data integrity
- Building scalable systems and processes to support organizational growth
- Collaborating with leadership to shape company culture and resolve grievances
More About You
To qualify, you will need post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an HR generalist or HR management role. Experience in the construction industry or supporting multi-site, field-based workforces is preferred.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- CPHR designation or progress toward completion
- Knowledge of HR best practices, employment standards, and safety compliance in construction
- Experience developing systems, scaling HR functions, and supporting organizational growth
- Familiarity with payroll, benefits administration, and HRIS platforms (Sage Intacct, Paymate Harmony, KPA)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and strong organizational skills
